The Filter Aisle Is Selling You a Number Your System Can't Handle
Somebody in your house upgraded the filter. It seemed like an obvious win — the box with the higher number promised to catch smoke, bacteria, and virus carriers, and it cost four dollars more.
Three months later the upstairs is warm, the system runs longer than it used to, and there is ice on a refrigerant line. Those things are connected, and we get called about them all summer.
Higher is not automatically better in filtration. It is a trade, and Houston homes sit on the wrong side of that trade more often than most.
What the number actually means
MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — rates how well a filter captures particles in specific size ranges. Roughly:
- MERV 1–4: the fiberglass panel that costs a dollar. Protects the equipment from lint and hair. Does essentially nothing for air quality.
- MERV 5–8: pleated, catches dust, pollen, mold spores, lint. What most residential systems are designed around.
- MERV 9–12: finer. Gets into the range where fine dust and some smoke particles are captured. Real air-quality improvement if your system can move air through it.
- MERV 13–16: hospital-adjacent territory. Captures very fine particulate. Also the most resistant to airflow by a wide margin.
Note the phrase that keeps appearing: resistant to airflow. That is the whole catch. A filter works by making air pass through a barrier. A better barrier is a bigger obstacle.
Why that matters more in Houston than in Denver
Two local realities.
Our systems run enormous hours. Nine to ten months of cooling means your blower spends a huge fraction of the year pushing air through whatever you put in that slot. A restriction that would be a mild inefficiency in a four-month cooling season is a permanent tax here.
Most Houston homes are return-starved to begin with. Builders in this market have historically installed one or two central returns for an entire house, sized to the minimum. Add a high-MERV filter to a system that was already short on return path and you have stacked two restrictions.
The result of that stack, in order of appearance:
- Airflow across the evaporator coil drops.
- The coil gets colder than designed, because less warm air is passing over it.
- It drops below freezing and ices up. Now airflow is worse, which makes the ice worse.
- The system stops cooling. Sometimes the compressor takes damage; liquid refrigerant returning to a compressor is how compressors die.
- Meanwhile the blower motor has been working against pressure it was not sized for, drawing more power and running hotter.
Every step of that costs money, and it started with a $16 filter.
The measurement that settles it
There is a number that answers this for your specific house, and almost nobody has it: total external static pressure.
Think of it as blood pressure for an HVAC system. We read it across the air handler with a manometer — one probe before the blower, one after. Most residential equipment is designed around roughly half an inch of water column of total external static. A great many Houston systems we test are running well above that before anyone touches the filter.
If your system already reads high, a MERV 13 filter is not an option and no amount of wanting cleaner air changes that. If it reads comfortably low, you have headroom and can go finer safely.
We take this reading as part of our inspection because it also tells us whether a duct problem is restriction or leakage — the two look identical from the living room, and we walk through that distinction in leaking ducts versus dirty ducts.
Practical guidance, if nobody has measured yours
Until you have a real number:
- MERV 8 to 11 is the safe band for most Houston homes with standard one-inch filter slots. It is a genuine improvement over fiberglass and almost never causes an airflow problem.
- Do not put a MERV 13+ one-inch filter in a system nobody has tested. This is the single most common self-inflicted airflow problem we see.
- If you want high filtration, buy area, not resistance. A four- or five-inch media cabinet has many times the surface area of a one-inch panel. More surface means the same fine filtration at a fraction of the pressure drop, plus you change it twice a year instead of monthly. Retrofitting a media cabinet is an HVAC job, not a duct-cleaning job, and it is usually the right answer for allergy households.
- Skip the "allergen" and "odor" marketing tiers and look for the MERV number. Some brands print their own proprietary scale in large type and the MERV in small type, or not at all.
- Never leave the slot empty, even for a day. An unfiltered system loads the coil with dust, and a fouled coil is a much larger repair than a filter.
Change intervals that reflect this climate
Manufacturer intervals are written for average homes in average climates. Adjust:
- One-inch pleated, no pets, no allergies: check monthly, expect to change every 60 days. Not 90.
- With pets, or during renovation: 30 days, sometimes less. Pet hair loads a filter fast, and drywall dust loads it faster than anything else.
- Four- or five-inch media: 6 to 12 months, but look at it at the halfway point.
- After any construction, flooring, or drywall work: change it when the work ends, regardless of the calendar, then again a month later.
Check the arrow. It points in the direction of airflow — toward the blower. A backwards filter collapses into the frame and lets unfiltered air past the edges. We find them backwards constantly.
What a filter cannot do
Worth being blunt, because a lot of marketing implies otherwise. A filter only treats air that passes through it. It does nothing about:
- Dust and debris already sitting in your ductwork downstream of the filter. That is what duct cleaning addresses, and it is why a house can have a spotless filter and still puff dust from a register.
- Biological growth on a wet evaporator coil, which sits downstream in the airstream. That is a coil cleaning job.
- Air infiltrating through duct leaks after the filter — which is most of the attic dust getting into Houston homes.
- Humidity. No filter of any rating removes moisture, and in this climate humidity is half the indoor air quality equation.
